Commander League Ideas

Commander League Points and Achievements: 112 Ideas

Steal these. We won't tell.

By Karim Awad · Updated September 2026 · 10 min read

Every Commander league eventually has the same argument: "Should killing someone be worth a point?"

The answer is yes, probably, and while you're at it you should also give a point to whoever casts a spell with mana value 10 or more, and take one away from the player who spent eleven minutes deciding whether to attack. Achievements are what turn a Commander league from "who won the most pods" into "remember when Dave won with his commander still in the command zone."

Below are 112 ideas, sorted into piles. Pick eight to twelve for a season. Swap a few out each month so nobody builds a deck that just farms the same three. And read the short bit on fairness before you go wild, because some of these are traps.

First, How Commander League Scoring Works

Achievements sit on top of your base scoring. Base scoring is what you get for how you finished in the pod. The two most common setups:

Base scoring Points Vibe
Placement 1st 3, 2nd 2, 3rd 1, 4th 0 Surviving matters. Great for casual leagues.
Win-based Win 3, draw 1, loss 0 Only the win counts. Pushes games to actually end.

Then achievements add (or subtract) a point or two for specific things that happened. Most of the ideas below are worth 1. A few are worth 2 because they're genuinely hard. Penalties are negative.

Five Rules So Achievements Don't Ruin Your League

  1. A win should always beat a pile of bonuses. If someone can lose every game and still top the standings by farming achievements, your bonuses are too big. Keep them at 1 point and cap them at about 3 per player per game.
  2. Only reward things everyone can see. "Had the nuts in hand" can't be checked. "Eliminated two players in one turn" can.
  3. Don't reward ganging up. "Eliminate the league leader" sounds fun until the same person gets focused out of every game for a month.
  4. Rotate them. Bring in a few new ones each month and retire a few old ones. It stops people building decks that exist purely to farm one bonus, and it gives the season some shape.
  5. Match your power level. Achievements belong in casual and mid-power leagues. For a cEDH event, skip them and use straight 5-1-0 scoring. Nobody at a cEDH table wants a point for "cast a Saga."

Setting This Up Without a Spreadsheet

Tracking bonus points by hand is where most Commander leagues die. Somebody forgets to write down First Blood, the spreadsheet says one thing and the whiteboard says another, and by week five nobody trusts the standings. Here's how it works on MTGSL's Commander league software:

  1. Pick your base scoring when you create the league: Pod Points (Placement), Commander Win Based, or your own custom points for 1st through 4th.
  2. Add your achievements in the league's Settings under Custom Achievements (Scoring). Give each one a name and a point value. Penalties just get a negative value.
  3. Tag them when the pod is reported. Whoever reports the result ticks off who earned what, and the points land on the standings with everything else.
  4. Rotate by adding, not deleting. Add new achievements any time. To retire one mid-season, just stop tagging it. Bonus points are totalled from the league's current list, so deleting an achievement also removes the points people already earned for it.

Pair it with a Commander Brackets cap if your league has a power level, and "Wrong Bracket" mostly takes care of itself: a deck declared above the cap can't be submitted. Achievements are a Commander league feature on purpose. cEDH leagues on MTGSL stick to win and draw points (5-1-0 by default), because that's how competitive EDH is played.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most leagues give base points for how you finished in each pod (3/2/1/0 for placement, or 3 for a win and 0 otherwise), then add small bonus points for achievements like eliminating a player or winning with a theme deck. Some leagues also take points away for things like slow play.

If someone can finish top three without winning a game, it's too many. One point per achievement and a cap of about three bonus points per game keeps them fun without letting them decide the league.

Usually not. cEDH is about winning, and bonus categories change how people play. Most cEDH events use straight 5-1-0 scoring. See our cEDH tournament software page for how that works.
